Why I (still) choose WordPress

If you’ve ever needed to pick a website platform, you know it can feel a bit like shopping for cereal: too many options, flashy packaging, and you’re not sure if you’re getting the “good” kind or the one that’s just sugar in disguise.

As a developer, I’ve tried them all — the trendy and shiny CMS platforms, the “easy” drag-and-drop site builders, and the enterprise-grade, rocket-science-level systems. But for most clients, I keep coming back to WordPress. And no, it’s not because I’m stuck in 2005.

Here’s why WordPress wins for me, and how that translates into benefits for my clients.

You own your website (and can take it anywhere).

Some website platforms are like hotels, where you can check in and decorate your room, but the second you leave, everything stays behind. WordPress is more like buying your own house. It’s yours, and you can move it, remodel it, or even paint the walls orange if you want. If you’d to switch hosting companies, improve speed, or get better support, you can. If you want to bring in a different designer or developer, you can. You’re not stuck paying whatever your current platform decides to charge or waiting for them to “approve” changes you want.

It’s flexible without forcing you into a box.

Need a simple brochure site? WordPress can do it. Want to add an online store, membership portal, or booking system down the road? WordPress can do that, too. You’re not locked into “what you signed up for” — it grows with your business instead of holding it back. This flexibility means you don’t have to have every answer about your website’s future on day one. Whether your business doubles in size or you decide to pivot completely, your website can adapt instead of forcing you to start over from scratch.

“WordPress remains my go-to because it simply works. And for most of my clients, that’s exactly what matters.”

There’s a plugin for (almost) everything.

Think of plugins like apps for your website. Need an events calendar? A donation form? Integration with your email list? Chances are, there’s a plugin that handles it without the need to reinvent the wheel or rack up huge development costs. You’re not limited to one person or one company creating these add-ons, either. Thousands of developers all over the world build and maintain plugins, which means there’s a vast ecosystem to choose from. That competition keeps quality high and prices reasonable, and it means your site can do almost anything without breaking the bank. Of course, custom-built features are always available, too.

You’re not dependent on one company.

Some platforms can vanish, change pricing, or suddenly “sunset” features you rely on (and yes, it happens more often than you think). With WordPress, your site isn’t tied to a single provider. Thousands of developers, agencies, and contractors can work on it. That means more freedom, more support, and fewer nasty surprises. This independence also makes budgeting easier. You can shop around for hosting, support, and maintenance services to find what works for you. If one provider stops delivering, you can move on without losing your entire website or paying costly migration fees. That’s peace of mind you just can’t get from a closed system.

You can still make edits yourself.

You don’t need to learn to code to update text, swap an image, or publish a blog post. I can set up the site so you have an easy dashboard for everyday edits, while still giving you a professional, custom look. This is a big deal for business owners who don’t want to wait days (or pay hourly) for small changes. Got a new promotion you want to feature? You can add it immediately. Spotted a typo? Fix it in seconds. You’re not locked into a “submit a ticket and wait” model that slows you down.

The web loves it.

Search engines like Google are very familiar with WordPress. It’s SEO-friendly right out of the box, and with the right tweaks, it can give you a head start in ranking for your target audience. Because so many websites use WordPress, there’s also a wealth of SEO tools and resources built specifically for it. That means you’re not experimenting blindly, you’re working with proven methods to help your site get found. And if Google changes its rules (which it often does), the WordPress community is quick to adapt.

The bottom line.

For me as a developer, WordPress offers the perfect balance of flexibility, control, and long-term stability. For you as a website owner, it means a site that’s future-proof, easy to update, and entirely yours. So, while there will always be shiny new tools vying for attention, WordPress remains my go-to because it simply works. And for most of my clients, that’s exactly what matters.
